Who we are…
Vern H. Reed is a dedicated educator, advocate, and trainer with a lifelong commitment to empowering at-risk students and addressing the impact of poverty on education. Vern began his career as a teacher and coach at West Burlington High School in Iowa, where he developed a deep commitment to helping students write their own future stories. Over time, he recognized that true transformation requires more than athletic coaching, it requires creating pathways for students to thrive academically and personally.
In 2003, Vern became the official “at-risk” point person at West Burlington High School, overseeing the transformation of the school’s “Success Center” into “The Corners,” a vibrant and inclusive space now serving over 120 junior high and high school students. Under his leadership, The Corners became a hub of support and opportunity, fostering a community where students feel valued and motivated.
Vern has been instrumental in bringing the Bridges Out of Poverty program to Southeast Iowa, fostering collaborations with local businesses, churches, community colleges, and healthcare providers. His expertise in addressing poverty and emotional poverty has led him to consult, train, and implement these principles in larger school settings. In 2019, he served as Under-Resourced Student Programming Coordinator in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he helped launch multiple programs to increase graduation rates and create opportunities for under-resourced students, including a new learning center serving 200 students.
Since retiring in 2021, Vern has continued his work alongside Dr. Payne and Aha Process, providing training to schools, resource providers, law enforcement, and community organizations. He is passionate about helping others recognize that those experiencing chronic stress and poverty are strong individuals, deserving of understanding and support.
Vern and his wife, Cindee, share a heartfelt dedication to connecting with and uplifting students. Their journey with Bridges has profoundly transformed their approach, reinforcing their mission to help students write brighter futures. Outside of work, Vern enjoys traveling with his family, exploring America in his motorhome, engaging in meaningful conversations over coffee, and reading thought-provoking books.
