Applying The Research

The Starfish Story Rebel Shoes Productions

Education Today has never been harder for teachers and under-resourced students alike. In both cases we have the research available to make a difference. Often, it feels like what teachers and students need is simply the “how”.

“How”, with all the expectations placed upon me,how with all the hurdles I see in my path do I really use this learning…

The answer to both of the questions above starts with “perceptions”. Our perception of a student’s situation - our perception of what we can do - and our perception of how to make a difference with a student…

Our perceptions, based on our life experiences often create unintentional hurdles that get in the way, and make a teacher’s job over-whelming.

The focus of this training is pretty simple and can be very impactful! Taking small steps, applying the research, without adding more to a teachers plate, can lead to big impact!

The “Starfish” story reminds us both of the impact that can happen when you make a difference for “one”, and that sometimes it starts with the way we see the world…PERCEPTION MATTERS!

The Perception Matters Training

To the left is an example of the learning from “Perception and the “Emotional” brain. This example was developed for schools in Michigan.

While each training introduces ideas on application from brain-based research readily available to educators, the focus is “how to use the research now.”

Our reality is the knowledge and tools educator’s need is readily available with a google search. The struggle is understanding the “what” to use and the “how” to apply in simple ways that make a huge impact.

Big Ideas,
Real Impact.

Munising Public Schools Thanks Vern Reed & Alger Matters (AC3). The teachers and administrators at MPS would like to express our gratitude to Vern Reed III, for helping provide another outstanding professional development opportunity for our teachers and paraprofessionals on August 26th and 27th.

Vern has worked with our staff 3 times now over a two year period and his expertise as well as his delivery style resonate with our educators and is helping to make a difference for all learners, especially those that are under-resourced.

Vern's experience as a long time alternative education teacher and professional consultant on poverty and brain research has really benefitted our students and staff.

Vern knows how to translate theory into practice and and has helped us develop our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to improve rigor, relevance, and relationships for all types of learners. Thank you Vern!
